Target: Insulin Resistance

The underlying cause of type 2 diabetes is the body's inability to properly use insulin, aka Insulin Resistance (IR). IR can take a decade or longer to develop into impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) which can lead to type 2 diabetes. This is evident in the fact that most people with type 2 diabetes are diagnosed well into their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Their bodies have been battling IR for years before they ever realize they had a problem! 

Recognizing that you are insulin resistant can radically alter your body's sustainability. How? Because you can reverse IR with intensive diet and exercise – reducing your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by over 55%!  I have no doubt in my military mind that we would all be healthier and live longer, if we ate as if we were already insulin resistant. 

This is great news, especially for our children. But let me guess...you've already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? Treating IR is still; hell, it's even more relevant to you. Because reversing the body's insulin resistance reduces the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood, reversing your diabetic condition.   

The overabundance of insulin is what is doing the most damage to your body. Every day that your A1C is above 5.5 damage is being done.  This causes damage to the smaller veins in the body and destroys the nerves in those areas (can you say Neuropathy?).  Once those nerves are damaged, you start to lose feeling in your fingers, toes, hands, feet, and even your PENIS!  Severe neuropathy can result in the loss of those same appendages!  But guess what – YOU are in control of your A1C.  

Research has found that best way to control your A1C is with diet and exercise. IR can be managed and reversed by reducing the amount of glucose your body produces and increasing how much glucose your body burns. It is important to note that even lean protein will be converted to glucose and stored by the body. So, just reducing sugar and sweet foods won't solve the problem. You must be mindful of not just what; but also, how much and how often you eat. Then you must make a concerted effort to burn more calories than you consume each day.  

So, don't lose something you may want to use!  Monitor you’re A1C!
